The most common injuries seen at the Level 1 Trauma Center at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center are those resulting from motor vehicle accidents. A great majority of these accidents involve drivers being distracted or impaired. The “Dignity Doesn’t Drive Distracted” program, also known as “D4,”was created. This program was developed with the broader intent of reducing and preventing such incidents by raising awareness and educating the community on the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. This presentation covers the problems associated with distracted and impaired driving, highlights Arizona statistics and data and covers ways to avoid developing bad habits. In addition we cover AZ DUI laws and statistics and how they contribute to motor vehicle accidents being a top mechanism of injury in the East Valley.
Following a 30-40 min PowerPoint presentation, participants will have the opportunity to wear alcohol impairment goggles and be walked through field sobriety tests to show the effects of alcohol on cognitive ability.
In addition, participants will have the opportunity to drive an electric go-kart that mimics the effects of distracted and impaired driving. These activities are optional for participants.
