Cost: $5.00 (Includes lunch) What are Varicose Veins? Varicose veins are the large, bulging veins typically felt and seen under the skin of the legs. They develop when the valves inside the vein that keep blood flowing towards the heart are not functioning properly, causing blood to flow towards the legs. This backwards flow is called “reflux,” and increases pressure in the veins, causing the wall to weaken and become enlarged. Who is susceptible? Women more than men Those with a family history of varicose veins Women who have been pregnant Those over 50 years old Those who are pregnant People who sit or stand for long periods Those with previous injury or infections of the leg What are the symptoms? Swelling in the legs, ankles or feet Fatigue Heaviness Aching Cramping Restless legs Itching or burning Thickening and discoloration of the skin Blood clots Ulcers How are they diagnosed? Physical exam is the primary way to diagnose varicose veins. Diagnosis is confirmed with the use of Dopper ultrasound. |
